Introduction
Most people think of Canare Star Quad as “the black microphone cable” used by sound companies, recording studios, and touring professionals. While black is certainly the most common choice, Canare actually manufactures the L-4E6S Star Quad cable in ten standard jacket colors.
Those additional colors aren’t just for looks—they can make cable management, troubleshooting, and permanent installations much easier.
Why Does Canare Offer So Many Colors?
Professional audio systems often contain dozens—or even hundreds—of microphone cables. When every cable is black, identifying specific runs can be frustrating.
Color-coded cables make it much easier to:
- Identify stage zones
- Separate monitor and FOH systems
- Label recording studio inputs
- Organize broadcast installations
- Simplify church and school sound systems

Sometimes a simple color choice can save a lot of time. I know that my personal blue cables make it a lot easier at the end of the night to know which cables are mine.
Black Is Still My Standard
For live sound reinforcement, black remains my standard stock color.
Black blends into the stage, disappears under lighting, and is what most musicians, production companies, and event venues expect to see.
While I personally use blue, most of my customers—including the wedding band I build cables for—prefer black because it blends into the stage.
When Other Colors Make Sense
There are situations where custom colors are actually the better choice.
For example:
- Blue for broadcast or network audio
- Green for monitor world
- Red for emergency or priority systems
- Yellow for temporary runs
- White for churches or light-colored interiors
- Gray for commercial installations
Many studios also assign specific colors to microphone groups or recording rooms, making setup faster and reducing mistakes.

While I normally stock black Canare Star Quad cable, many of the other colors can often be ordered for custom cable builds.
